Cathedral Evensong for Transgender Day of Visibility

We observe Trans Day of Visibility with a service of Cathedral Evensong at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 30. The Reverend Toby Darrah, curate of St. Clare’s of Ann Arbor, will offer a homily during this contemplative service.

Class and Formation

Catechesis

Catechesis is instruction in the basic doctrines of Christianity. This class meets Sundays, March 2 to April 6, 12:45–2:15 p.m. Suitable for those preparing for confirmation and reception, as well as those who are simply curious, this class will cover the Book of Common Prayer catechism, the history of the Bible, and the practice of Anglican liturgy. Attendees are asked to read An Outline of the Faith: commonly called the Catechism (Book of Common Prayer pages 845-862) in advance of our first meeting. A digital version is available at www.bcponline.org. You are welcome to bring a lunch.

Wednesday Evenings in Lent Toward a Radical Hospitality

What does it mean to be welcoming and inclusive? Join Father True and others for a deep dive into Christian hospitality. Join us at 7:00 p.m. each Wednesday in Lent (March 12 through April 9) for a series of presentations and discussions on a variety of topics. Each evening is preceded by Holy Eucharist, at 6:30 p.m.

Music of Bach in March

The Art of Fugue

Shuntaro Sugie, harpsichord
Friday, March 14, 7:00 p.m.
Written in the last decade of his life, and cut short by his death, Bach’s The Art of Fugue is designed around a single theme. Over the course of fourteen fugues and four canons, Bach develops this idea with increasing complexity. Shuntaro Sugie will perform the entire monumental work upon the Cathedral’s harpsichord, and seating will be available on the Chancel, close to the performer and instrument. Suggested donation at the door for both concerts: $10 (adults); $5 (students and seniors).

The Mendelssohn Bach recital of 1840

Friday, March 28, 7:00 p.m.

Felix Mendelssohn was amongst the greatest advocates for the music of Johann Sebastian Bach and worked tirelessly to bring this music before public again after a period of severe neglect following the master’s death. One of his most important efforts was an organ recital of Bach’s music given in St. Thomas Church, Leipzig in 1840 where Bach had been Kantor from 1723-1750. Jeremy David Tarrant recreates this program on the Cathedral’s grand pipe organ. The audience will be able to see the organist in action via large screen. Suggested donation at the door: $10 (adults); $5 (students and seniors).

The Cathedral is delighted to be hosting Night Watch again this year on March 15 and 16. Night Watch is a lock-in event for middle and high school students in the Episcopal Diocese of Michigan. For more information for you, or a young person in your life, click here.
